Willmott Dixon first approached Contego to assist with the removal of pigeon guano during the planned demolition of the Futurist Theatre in Scarborough in early 2017.
Whilst on site, we identified the historic kittiwake nesting site as an area of concern and made the client aware that the demolition could be completely disrupted if the kittiwakes came back.
Working with the client, we formed an action plan to remove the nests, clean the site, and install nets in sections across the building.
This high-profile site has received much attention and we have worked closely with Willmott Dixon, Scarborough Council, and local groups to ensure the action plan had a successful outcome.
Our bird mitigation plan included proofing, on-site training for staff in the safe and effective use of bird deterrent lasers, installation of a bioacoustic distress call unit, and use of hawk kites with falconry response. Throughout the project, Contego has been on Kitti-Watch with 24/7 response to attend the site if the need arose.
• Old nest removed • Bioacoustics
• Sectional netting installed edge protection
• Bird escape hatches decontamination
• 24/7-kittiwatch bird escape hatch installed
